View Our Full Range of Oil Seals
Oil seals are commonly used in driveshafts, crankshafts and hydraulic cylinders where a rotating shaft is lubricated by oil or grease. The seal works like a cap, covering the clearance between the shaft and housing, stopping fluids from leaking whilst preventing containments from entering the chamber. If you are replacing a worn part because you have identified a leak, refer to your machinery handbook to find the type of oil seal you require. Whilst this is not always possible there are a few guidelines to help you get the right seal for the job, read our identify oil seals guide here.
Measurement: The inner diameter surrounding the rotating shaft is typically fitted with an energised sealing lip, or garter spring, which allows some give to prevent a build-up of friction. Meanwhile, the outer diameter must have a secure fit with the static housing or bore. Therefore, we recommend sizing the oil seal with a smaller inner diameter and wider outer diameter.
Design: Polymax oil seals are currently available in three designs: Type A (fully enclosed elastomer), Type B (partly enclosed elastomer) and Part C (partly enclosed, metal reinforced). Type A is fully enclosed with a rubber elastomer. Type B and C both have metal exposed on the top which allows for a tighter tolerance and Type C features an additional metal insert for heavy duty applications.
Other Considerations: Our comprehensive range of oil seals is available in Imperial or Metric sizes, single or double lips and Nitrile or Viton rubber materials.
